Urban renewal in Turkiye

With the adoption in 2012 of Law No. 6306 on the reconstruction of buildings with a risk of natural disasters, urban renewal began in all cities of Turkey. Under said law, people who wanted to reclaim their properties were provided with government support such as reduced interest, rental assistance, and exemptions from certain fees. Thus, the renewal of buildings in cities that were in danger of collapse or serious damage began.

What is urban renewal?

Property owners voluntarily conduct an examination of their buildings to determine whether they are objects of risk. As a result of this examination, carried out by experts, a decision is made to demolish buildings that have a design hazard report. The land registry authorities notify property owners of the demolition decision by sending a notice. Owners have the right to dispute the report within 15 days. The building must be demolished within 60 days if there is no objection. If property owners do not demolish the building within 60 days, an additional 30 days are granted. After this additional period, the building is demolished by the local administration, the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.

What is a dangerous building?

A hazardous building is a definition used for structures that are likely to be destroyed or severely damaged by a natural disaster. The first step to transforming the city is the discovery of dangerous buildings by a group of experts. In order for a building to be recognized as a hazardous structure, it must be inspected by institutions and organizations authorized by the Ministry of the Environment and Urbanization. By visiting institutions and organizations authorized to identify dangerous buildings under Law No. 6306, you can get information about organizations that will request inspection of dangerous buildings.
